1001 Books to Read Before You Die

Hello hello! 🙂     (I like “Hello’s”, don’t I? 😛 )

The other day I stumbled upon a site talking about 1001 books to read before you die and challenges concerning it ….

Woah!! 1001?!

There used to be 100, now they upped it to 1001 ?? O_O How many years would THAT take?

1001 Books at Amazon

I think this is the site that I’d found the list, but it refuses to load so I will post the list here as well.

I was curious, (and up for a challenge), so I found the list of books. There is a very nice and handy excel sheet that lists them all, and you can mark which you’ve read already, which you want to read next, etc. If you donate there are even better features for it.

Well… I’ve read 5 of those 1001 books. FIVE. Wow, what a super amazing achievement. *sarcasm*

I would have had the number to 6, if it hadn’t stopped reading “Great Expectations” some years ago due to the difficult language being used. But I cannot be like that, so I would like to read some of those and be more knowledgeable, more experienced, more scholarly. Hell, half of those books I don’t even remember them because it’s been some years since I last read them.

There is also… dun duuun!!!

1001 Children’s Books You Must Read Before You Grow Up

Well, you may say: “Haven’t we already grown up?”

Well, maybe yes or maybe no, but I think it’s still good to read such books. It opens your eyes about your inner child, your childhood, your (current or future) children and their behavior. It opens your mind to other perspectives and point of views.

This is the song that came on Spotify as I was writing the blog post… And I like this song a lot. It depends on my mood of course, but I think at the moment I can handle it if I don’t listen to it TOO much. 😛

P.S. This post was written on June 18th 2010 😛 Yes, I am going through my Drafts and publishing them finally 😛 I really don’t know why I didn’t publish them in the first place 😛

  1. The Blade of Light says:

Hmm, interesting list and diverse … I have read only these :

The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, Douglas Adams
All Quiet On The Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque
Great Expectations, Charles Dickens (I do not remember a thing of it though :/ )
    Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens
The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain
The Lord Of The Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien
    Foundation, Isaac Asimov
    I, Robot, Isaac Asimov
    The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien
The Hound Of The Baskervilles, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson
    Don Quixote, Miguel de Cervantes
    Aesop’s Fables, Aesopus
Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, Jules Verne
Around The World In Eighty Days, Jules Verne
(but where is Verne’s “L’Eternelle Adam”, by FAR his best book imho )

… but I really do not think that I could read all of these books, however good the people that created the list might think they are … For example I cannot imagine myself reading “Lady Chatterley’s Lover”, I mean really .?. 😛

On the other hand there are some really important and unique books missing lik, Plato’s “Politeia”, Wilhelm Reich’s “listen Little man” ? Or even Homer for crying out loud !

In any case, a very good topic 😀

Definitely in my “To read” list :
Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?
    Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell
Brave New World, Aldous Huxley (Dru I see that you have read it … is it good .?. )
The War Of The Worlds, H.G. Wells

    • Wow, you’ve read a lot!!! Good for you 😀

      > For example I cannot imagine myself reading “Lady Chatterley’s Lover”, I mean really .?. 😛

Ahahaha 😀 Well maybe it’s a super wonderful, inspirational, thought-provoking, blah blah blah book 😛 Never judge a book by its cover (or title!), lol 😛

Brave New World, Aldous Huxley (Dru I see that you have read it … is it good .?. ) On the other hand there are some really important and unique books missing lik, Plato’s “Politeia”, Wilhelm Reich’s “listen Little man” ? Or even Homer for crying out loud !

Why not make your own list then? 😉

      > a very good topic 😀

      thanks thanks 😀

You read quite a lot indeed. I want comments on:

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain
The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
      “L’Eternelle Adam”, Vernes

One is in my list and the other one I am considering. The third i have never heard of before :p

      • The Blade of Light says:

        > The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain

        > The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Απο Sherlock Holmes έχω τα άπαντα (καμια χιλιαριά σελίδες) και είναι τόσο καλό που τα έχω διαβάσει δύο φορές και σκέφτομαι να το ξεκινήσω και τρίτη. 😀

        > “L’Eternelle Adam”, Vernes

        http://www.biblionet.gr/main.asp?page=showbook&bookid=170482

Αλλά και το αυθεντικό artwork του βιβλίου (που είχε διατηρηθεί απο τον Αστέρο) :

Κατά την ταπεινή μου άποψη, από τα καλύτερα βιβλία που έχω διαβάσει. MUST HAVE !

  2. Estelle4565 says:

I will second George Orwel’s 1984. I very interesting book thought by no means pleasant. I second the Lord of the Rings counting as three books. And of course they forgot Silmarrilion and books by Agatha Christie. Such an insult. I have read 13 of the books mentioned here:

Memoirs Of A Geisha, Arthur Golden
    2001: A Space Odyssey, Arthur C. Clarke
    Solaris
The Lord Of The Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien
    Foundation, Isaac Asimov
    Rebecca, Daphne du Maurier
    The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien
The Hound Of The Baskervilles, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Around The World In Eighty Days, Jules Verne
    Crime And Punishment, Fyodor Dostoevsky
    Oliver Twist, Charles Dicken
    Pride And Prejudice, Jane Austen
    Sense And Sensibility, Jane Austen

And I had forgotten that I read some of them… Go figure… If this is any indication I think I probably have read more books than I remember reading :p

Hey does watching the movie counts? :p

And I want to read several more (hint, hint ;p) :
The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Through The Looking Glass, And What Alice Found There, Lewis Carroll
    War And Peace, Leo Tolstoy
The Life And Adventures Of Nicholas Nickleby, Charles Dickens
The Thousand And One Nights, Anonymous
The Unbearable Lightness Of Being, Milan Kundera
The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, Douglas Adams
    I, Robot, Isaac Asimov
    The Maltese Falcon, Dashiell Hammett”

As for the rest. I have heard of several of them, but their plots never inspired me to read them. Have watched a several on the tv and with the exception of “the hitchhicker’s guide to the galaxy I was not inspired to read them either.

As for you only having read 5. Well there are other books, like the Northern Lights that are not mentioned here but are good books. So do not get irritated or dispirited by it. And anyway a book it to be read to give u enjoyment. What is the point otherwise. But it is admirable that you want to read more books. Something that of course all of us should aspire to. After all books provide the food for the mind :D.

Ah last comment. Finishing your drafts and publishing them is a very good idea 😀
And if this was published as it was when u wrote it, it looks like a very nice post to me. 🙂

    • The Blade of Light says:

      > And of course they forgot Silmarrilion and books by Agatha Christie. Such an insult.

      So true !!

      > The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
      > The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, Douglas Adams
      > I, Robot, Isaac Asimov

Great Choices indeed ! Distance notwithstanding I cound have lent them to you because e-books for such masterpieces are simply not the same … :/

      • Maybe it can be sent! If it’s a light book that you really want to read. Well… I had to pay 4 euros to send a book so maybe not so cheap. 😛 But if there is a will, there is a way! 😛 (E.g. Blade you could give it to K. so she can give it to me when I meet her and thus give it to Estelle when we meet 😛 Would take a while though)

  3. Nice! All in all I think I’ve read about 50+ of them. Though there must be at least another 20 I’ve wanted to read and haven’t thus far – mainly some of the science fiction titles. There are a lot of other books I’ve read that should be on the list but aren’t, for example George Orwells’ 1984, or Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff … and of course, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey. Lastly, I must say the Lord Of The Rings should count as 3 – and they didn’t even have one ‘Star Wars’ book! 😛
